Fare thee well, Bear

#921 1 year, 2 months ago
A Beautiful Mind

I received a text in the middle of last night that Bear Stanley has died in a car accident in Australia. Bear, for me, was a true kindred spirit; when we first met, it was as if I had met a long-lost brother from another lifetime. I am heartbroken and devastated at his passing.

He was a friend, a brother, an inspiration, and our patron at the very beginning of our creative lives. We owe him more than what can be counted or added up- his was a mind that refused to accept limits, and he reinforced in us that striving for the infinite, the refusal to accept the status quo, that has informed so much of our work.

He never gave up his quest for pushing the limits of whatever he was working on. We had just been discussing his concept of point-source sound reinforcement in relation to a new project of mine, and his vision incorporated the latest developments in technology and perceptual research.

My heart goes out to his family, for whom he had such love and pride- his wife Sheilah, his children, grand-children, and great-grandchildren- who have lost their patriarch.

A mind like Bear’s appears very rarely, and it’s been my privilege and honor to have known and loved two such minds- Jerry and Bear. I always laugh when I think about what Jerry once said about Bear: There’s nothing wrong with Bear that several billion fewer brain cells wouldn't fix.

I am eternally grateful for all of the gifts that Bear brought to the scene and to the music.
Fare you well; I love you more than words can tell.

- Phil

Condolences to Phil and all of the Grateful Dead musicians and contributors to the scene....I'll not pretend that I knew him, I'm only 33 years old, but this music and this magic has changed my life and I know Bear was a huge part of all of it.

RIP.

He made a difference in this world that will last beyond his lifetime.

I wanna see you tonight
Dancing in the endless moonlight
In the parking lot in the headlights of cars
Someplace on the moon
Where they moved the drive-in theater
Where I left the car that I can't find but I still got the keys to
Let it ride
Let it ride easy down the road
Let it ride
Let it take away all of this darkness
Let it ride
Let it rock me in the arms of stranger's angels until it brings me home
Let it ride
Let it roll
Let it go

Phil, your heartfelt words mean a lot. We should always be eternally grateful for what he gave to our scene in so many ways.
I wanted to share a little story about Bear; I was with my sister and her husband, standing on the top of the hill at Pine Knob
'84, when this guy walks up to my sister. He grabbed the pendant on her necklace, which happened to be her husbands grandmothers wedding ring which had been melted. As Bear began to grab, then observe it my brother in law was a bit taken aback, and began to say something like hey bub. I had just spotted Bear's GD issued laminate and saw the name Bear on it then
said to my bro in law, uh, don't worry he's cool. After he left I told bro in law who he was. I think they were somewhat flattered.
God bless you Alice D. Millionaire and R.I.P. Augustus Owsley Stanley III. Fare thee well our brother, and thanks....

Phil what horrible news but thank you for sharing.

My wife and I got to know Bear and Sheila a few years ago while we were in Australia and my wife's field site for her PHD research just happen to be within spitting distance of their place. Those were some truly profound and memorable times.

Bear helped shape the way I approach audio engineering and his ideas will surely live on! I've been experimenting and using point source systems based on Bear's ideas as much as possible for a couple years now and am amazed how the industry scoffs at such things. If only they'd listen with their ears and not with their eyes! The Magic Orb!

Phil, if you ever want a hand with your project let me know I would love to help.

Am sad beyond words,

Bear, may you rest in peace.
