I am really struggling to reconcile the feeling that there are many things this band does better than any of its precedessors vs. maybe the technology just allows us to hear everything much more clearly.
Well, there are things that they do that are NEWER than anything that has ever been done before. They are the band that is, in this time, taking it FURTHUR. If they were not, then we would not come. Improvisational music must move forward, fearlessly. That is the job of the torchbearers. To take it Furthur.
That being said, we can never forget that Jerry is the original. All of these songs we are hearing were created, written, formed, burned into our consciousness by Jerry. Without him there would never have been a Grateful Dead. Without him there would never have been a Furthur. He is the light that shines on this stage every night.
All this goes to show that Jerry is the be all and end all of the whole thing. Furthur is a great band, playing great music, providing us all with great experiences and that is all due to the unbelievably huge legacy that Garcia left behind. All of those songs, all of that spirit, all of that magical mythology and melody is enough, even in his absence, to carry us all furthur, right to the point of Phil's and Bobby's and our deaths. Pretty incredible.
