"Only The Strange Remain" The Dead

#279610 11 months ago
OK, I don't think Furthur has done "Only The Strange Remain". Does anyone know the last time either band has played this song. I know of Deer Creek 04'. Ridiculous
I relize this is a Mickey song. It looks like they played it about 3 times in 03' and maybee about another 8 or 7 times from 98` to 02`

Furthur has never played it. I know Mickey has. And the Dead. Not sure if anyone else has. Or when it was played.
I can't come down, it's plain to see.
I can't come down, I've been set free.
Who you are, and what you do,
don't make no difference to me.

The Grateful Dead made a studio version of Only the Strange Remain in 1973. Penned by Robert Hunter and sung by Mickey (who stated that he was trying to sound like Robert Hunter). The song was given to radio stations to play (which is where I first head it) but never 'officially' released. In 1996 Mickey released an album called Mystery box. This contained the first and only released studio version of this song. In 1999 the Other Ones released a live two CD set titled The Strange Remain, that has a live version of this song on it.

In 1998 The Other One's performed this song on the following dates / locations:

Polaris Amphitheater, Columbus, OH, 7/12/98
Pine Knob Music Theater, Clarkston, MI, 7/13/98
Deer Creek Music Center, Noblesville, IN, 7/15/98
World Music Theater, Tinley Park, IL, 7/16/98
Riverport Amphitheater, Maryland Heights, MI, 7/17/98
Fiddler's Green Amphitheater, Englewood, CO, 7/19/98
Thomas & Mack Center, U of Nevada, Las Vegas, 7/21/98
Irvine Meadows Amphitheater, Irvine, CA, 7/22/98
Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View, CA, 7/25/98

The Dead performed this song on the following dates / locations:

Mansfield, MA, June 22, 2003
Millwaukee, WI, July 1, 2003
Tampa, FL, July 30, 2003
Columbus, OH, August 6, 2003
Irvine, CA, September 18, 2003
Irvine, CA, June 24, 2004
Indianapolis, IN July 25, 2004
Boston, MA, July 31, 2004
Wantagh, NY, August 14, 2004

Only The Strange Remain
Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Mickey Hart

I've been searching in sectors both private and dark
With the eye of a witness - silent and stark
Seen everything that goes on in the night
Things that are twisted and hide from the light
Things that live under the rock and the stone
Flesh like a fever on a platter of bone
Blacker than blackness and whiter than white
Things that live only on the edges of sight

So I pack my sack with a fistful of fire
There are cutthroats and thieves in this night of desire
Who steals this treasure must contend with its flame
Where only the strange remain

Yea, only the strange remain
Only the strange remain
Only the strange remain
Only the strange remain

Looking deep and then deeper into every face
Past beauty and wisdom, past gender and race
I see a lone hungry wolf in a shining blue flame
And only the strange remain

I'm dying of thirst with a drink in my hand
Praying for something that I don't understand
One foot on the gravel, one foot in the sky
Too reckless to live and too careful to die

When the moment has passed
With death at the door
Will I still look for answers
Will I still beg for more?
Will I slip into silence or ride with the pain
Where only the strange remain

Yea, yea, yea
Only the strange remain
Only the strange remain
Only the strange remain

Tell me friend, have you noticed of late
How only the strange remain?
I'm speaking about the cream of the strange
Not the merely weird, out of sight or insane
No, only the strange remain
Only the strange remain

They keep on talking just to rattle their teeth
A light coat of surface and nothing beneath
They're fishing for answers with love as the bait
Related to something that time doesn't date
Soon as it's spoken, it no longer applies
Words twist and stutter and deliver up sighs

If truth is impossible, so is the lie
There's no in-between, you can't swim, you can't fly
At the uttermost link at the end of our chain
Only the strange remain
Only the strange remain

In the dark of silence the strange remain
Yea, only the strange remain

Only the strange remain
Only the strange remain
Only the strange remain

In Robert Hunters book (entitled Box of Rain Collected Lyrics of), there is one more verse:

Wolves of the Winterland, teeth broken white
Sons of the harvest and daughters of the night
Dancing in thunder to conquer the rain
Where only the strange remain
Only the strange remain

They really recorded this in the 70s? That's hard to believe.

As for 98 other ones, yes, love 'em. My dream line up would be bob, phil, mickey, billy with hornsby on keys and barry sless or stu allen on guitar. bruce would sing all jerry tunes, bob would sing his and...you get the picture.

we are similiar in taste, while i LOVE ratdog, and really dig furthur and alot of Phils projects, 98 TOO was like the big, "lets get back truckin on...." kinda feel, even if it was short lived. every show ending with "Happy Trails" like the old winterland gigs.
that tour had some gems. and hornsbey was a BIG part. but jeff has done so much with the keys, if i am to fantasize, i shall have it all....

BOB,PHIL,BILL,MICK,BRUCE,JEFF,BRANFORD MARSALIAS, AND KIMOCK OR SCOFIELD.

I don't know if you heard "Deer Creek" in '04 but that was my deepest most heady jam "Ever". Out of all the ones I've heard to me is the best. If you were in the rage isle when that came out the groove is just sooo sickly kinda dark dirty rockin Dead. Never seen kids rage soo hard. OMG take me back. Show and lot was decent of course...it's creek
