Furthur November 2010 Tour
Thursday, 12 August 2010 01:44
Many Midwest Dead Heads have been calling for some Midwest Furthur shows, and this tour unequivocally answers their requests with a tour-opening trio of shows in Minneapolis, Ames, IA, and St. Louis, followed by two nights in Chicago. The tour-opening show is at the very same venue that the Grateful Dead played on 10/19/71, the night they debuted the new version of the band featuring Keith Godchaux on piano in his first appearance with the Grateful Dead. The tour then moves on to a couple of places Furthur hasn’t yet hit, Reading, PA and Baltimore, MD. The 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore was previously known as the Baltimore Civic Center, site of six Grateful Dead shows. Most famous amongst those would be 9/17/72, featuring a nearly 40 minute Other One (also one of the best of a year filled with great Other Ones!), and 4/19/82, at which Phil recited Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven” during “Space.” The tour ends in very familiar Dead Head terrain: one show at the Worcester Centrum (now DCU Center) followed by two nights at Madison Square Garden, a fitting close to the tour after the band has played so many New York (and area) gigs in the past year.

Furthur September 2010 Tour
Thursday, 12 August 2010 01:42
Furthur’s west coast run in September will see the band hitting some magnificent venues. The first stop features two nights at the magical Cuthbert Amphitheatre in what is likely one of the most Dead Head-friendly cities in America, Eugene, OR. The first time any GD members played here was in August, 1999, when Phil and Friends played two nights at Cuthbert as part of the Summer Sessions, a tour featuring String Cheese Incident, Gov’t Mule and moe. These two shows are followed by another small Pacific Northwest gig near Seattle, in Redmond, WA, followed by a show at another great venue, the Santa Barbara County Bowl, a small outdoor amphitheatre familiar to southern California Heads from Jerry’s and Bob’s appearances there in the 1970s, as well as Phil and Friends’ appearance on that August, 1999 tour that hit Eugene. The Greek in LA is up next, followed by the Joint in Las Vegas, with the tour ending with what is the most anticipated series of Furthur shows since those of a year ago when the band debuted at the Fox in Oakland, with three nights at Red Rocks. The Grateful Dead’s history at Red Rocks since 1978 is well known, and has continued with numerous Phil and RatDog appearances over the past decade. It’s as though they’ve been there so long, they’ve got to calling it home.
